How does language influence and shape us? Join us for a free, fun-filled day at Assembly Festival Gardens to explore how everyone’s life-stories and languages collectively shape who we are.


Activity stations in the Treehouse

Location: Treehouse, Assembly Festival Gardens
When: 11:00-19:00
Who for: all ages

Drop into the Treehouse anytime between 11am-7pm and visit one of our activity stations.
Free activities include:

  • exploring different languages linked to Coventry (including Latin)
  • designing a t-shirt with a favourite slogan of your choice
  • finding out where words come from
  • trying your hand at translating animal noises

and much more....

Interactive workshops running on the hour all day from 11am in the Treehouse

Location: Treehouse, Assembly Festival Gardens
When: 11:00am-7:00pm
Who for: all ages

  • 11-12pm: Where Google Translate won’t help - Disney songs and importance of language learning
  • 12-1pm: Try your hand at storytelling and weaving, plus origami
  • 1-2pm: Pot seeds while hearing about the Roma Allotment project
  • 2-3pm: Meet the team behind ‘Colonial Hangover: The Magazine’
  • 3-4pm: Hear life stories from the ‘Queer and Coloured in Coventry’ project
  • 4-5pm: Watch performances from story-tellers of the future
  • 5-6pm: Join in the fun of a live performance of poetic song and giddha performance
  • 6-7pm Listen to live readings of personal stories related to racism in Coventry’s past


Interactive talks and performances in the Piccolo Theatre

Location: Piccolo Theatre, Assembly Festival Gardens
When: 12-4.30pm
Who for: all ages

People of any age can join us for a series of fascinating interactive talks covering:

  • 12-12:45pm: Twinned Cities of Coventry and their languages
  • 12:45-1:30pm: How the Coventry accent has shifted through the ages
  • 1:30-2:15pm: A deeper dive into Coventry’s 120+ languages
  • 2:15-3pm: Learn Chinese in just 40 minutes!
  • 3-4:30pm: Short films about the life stories of Coventry, including: Coventry’s Roma Community Allotment Project, Home Truths Project, Noises of the Past, Cinema 3, Brutalist Architectures, Comrades of the City, Imagineer Initiative

Access information

The main entrance is step-free and each performance space has step-free access.

Wheelchair-accessible toilets are available alongside our main toilet facilities in the north-eastern corner of the Garden and these will be clearly signposted when in the Garden. In addition, there is another wheelchair-accessible toilet located in the south-western corner of the Garden next to the entrance of the Queen of Flanders spiegeltent.
