Night walk along the Coventry Canal filled with light, projection and wonder for all ages. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Ludic Rooms invites you to a night time experience of art and light for all ages along Coventry Canal for Random String Festival 2021.

Random String is Ludic Rooms’ biennial festival of arts and technology. This year we’re bringing light, sound and projections to a stretch of Coventry Canal, following a 1km trail that ends in the Canal Basin. We invite you to venture along the canal and explore artworks that transform the waterway and our sense of place. This year’s theme is Future Folk, and we’re exploring new kinds of folklore and rituals for life by the water in the 21st Century. Discover the future creatures of the urban canal, gods and goddesses of the waterways, and new kinds of folk-tales.

Come out into the midwinter darkness for a special moment in the City of Culture year. You can buy tickets for timed slots across all four nights between 5pm-9pm. Part of this art trail includes an audio piece, so please bring headphones with you as we won’t be able to provide them.

Ludic Rooms is a Coventry-based arts and technology company who have been running Random String Festival since 2014. Their work is currently focused on the Coventry Canal Basin and they're excited to invite local audiences to explore this special part of the city. Ludic Rooms likes to make work with other people and we’ve commissioned, collaborated and supported artists from near and far, to make this Festival happen.

This is an outdoors experience and will include access along footpaths where some ground may be uneven and visibility may be low. Please wear shoes and clothes suitable for moderate walking and weather conditions.  You will need to bring a smartphone and your own pair of headphones to listen.

Random String Festival 2021 is produced by Ludic Rooms in partnership with Coventry City of Culture Trust. Supported with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England and the Canal & River Trust.

Process and development of Random String

All of the work you will see at Random String Festival has been produced especially for the festival. Ludic Rooms has been working with artists and local people throughout 2021 across various strands…

Future Folk (Artist R&D)

Future Folk is a series of collaborative R&D projects in which Ludic Rooms invite artists to explore common themes in folk cultures to imagine what a new folk culture of the 21st Century might look like.

roam+dwell (Summer Public Events)

Over three months this summer we ran weekly outdoor events in Coventry Canal Basin that provided creative opportunities to both dwell in the basin and roam up the canal. More than 1500 people attended and participated in our summer programme and contributed to the creative research and realisation of festival artworks.

Art of Place (Artist Training Lab)

Six Coventry artists took part in a three-day workshop to explore place-based working and respond to the Canal Basin as a site for artworks and installations. Some of these concepts are now being developed for further sharing at the festival.

Future Ecologies (Nest Artist Residencies)

Led by Talking Birds, a Nest Residency is time, space and conversation with other artists, and is designed to allow you to think, experiment and take a punt on one of those ‘What if…?’ ideas. Nest Residencies prioritise applications from d/Deaf, disabled, neurodivergent and/or locally-based artists.

Landlocked (Local Residents’ Workshops)

Working with Juneau Projects to imagine the creatures that might emerge from the Coventry Canal in the future. Ludic Rooms hosted pop-up workshops in public spaces up and down the canal as well as working with three local primary schools.
