What does Christmas look like to you?
In the media, Christmas is marketed as a time of plenty and excess. The pressure to consume is intensified, together with a pressure to conform to societal expectations. Being bombarded with this one-way narrative leaves droves of people feeling isolated and excluded.
ANOTHER CHRISTMAS is a new film shining a light on those who don’t fit into traditional boxes. Through new compositions, interpretations and new arrangements of classics and by covering a number of different real life stories, ANOTHER CHRISTMAS hones in on the collective feeling of the outsider as an antidote to the pressures of a commercialised Christmas.
It’s a rebellion against, and refreshing relief from, the relentless recycled Christmas narrative - at least for one night! Sit down and watch an alternative Christmas film, where we lift the tinsel curtain, cut through the predictable ‘fluffy’ sound of Christmas, and give voice to other experiences and the experiences of all.
We’ll be told stories by some of Coventry’s residents who have different perspectives and experiences that are often unheard, unseen and airbrushed out of the Christmas picture. They’ll give unique reinterpretations of popular songs including Last Christmas, Fairytale of New York, and I’ll Take Care Of You against a backdrop of live performance and documentary-style visual montages. Plus newly commissioned work from Douglas Dare, Camille O'Sullivan and Eska with Duke Garwood.
Commissioned by Music Beyond The Mainstream, with co-commissioners Coventry City of Culture Trust and Barbican Centre and presented in Coventry by Coventry City of Culture Trust. Supported with funding by Spirit of 2012.
The film has been directed by Samona Olanipekun and musical performances come from Camille O’Sullivan, Douglas Dare, Duke Garwood, ESKA, Feargal Murray and Oliver Coates.
