The Volgograd Digital Tablecloth has been created with arts organisations and community groups in Coventry and Volgograd to provide a picture of everyday life, as seen through the eyes of their citizens.
It was conceived in 2019 by Twin Studios to commemorate an act of extraordinary solidarity between the people of the two cities when, 80 years ago, the women of Coventry embroidered a tablecloth to raise money for, and send solidarity to, the embattled people of Volgograd.
Coventry is known around the world as a city of peace and reconciliation evidenced in part through its work spreading understanding through an extensive network of twin cities, something we have celebrated as UK City of Culture 2021. This includes hearing, and providing platforms for, the voices of artists and citizens from around the world who often struggle to find voice in time of conflict.
Due to the events in recent days, we have taken the decision to postpone the public sharing of the Tablecloth. This is absolutely no reflection on those involved in the project, but we feel this is the right course of action for now.
We are appalled by the events in Ukraine and send our thoughts to all affected as we join our partners in calling for urgent resolution to this hostility and a return to peace.
