How do we meet the creative challenge of climate change together?

Join us on Zoom for an open discussion as we unveil the Coventry 2021 Green Code.

We’re committed to environmentally responsible programming and producing sustainable culture, and we want to hear your ambitions and priorities for sustainability.

Come and hear how the Coventry City of Culture Trust, working with people and organisations across the city, plans to use and evolve the Green Code over the next 12 months and beyond. Guest speakers will include Sidharth Sharma (Kambe Events) and Jacob Gough (Production Director, Coventry City of Culture Trust), Sarah Worth (Highly Sprung) and Alan Rivetts (Trustee, Coventry City of Culture Trust).

Tickets must be booked in advance. Spaces are free and limited to ensure all participants can be involved in the workshop.

MARCH 2021: AMAZING WOMEN

In March, we came together for an evening of creativity and open conversation exploring Women’s voices in the current climate.

The conversation was led by Laura Nyahuye, Maokwo’s founder, Artistic and Creative Director.

FEBRUARY 2021: WHAT'S ART GOT TO DO WITH IT?

The pandemic has brought inequality and the challenges faced by many in society into sharp focus. It has also shone a spotlight on the relationship between creativity and our wellbeing, igniting new hobbies and old passions for art of all kinds.

But what about the role of the Arts in social change? As we ‘build back better’, what’s art got to do with it?This workshop was a space to reconnect and consider how the arts might continue to challenge the status quo. It was led by Coventry artist Edie Jo Murray alongside artists from the Reform the Norm Collective’s first cohort.

We talked about why our City of Culture has a Caring City team and share some highlights of our Caring City manifesto.

DECEMBER 2020: ARTS, SANCTUARY AND WELCOME

In the week we celebrated International Migrants Day (18 December), we came together for discussion, spoken word performances and music exploring how the arts can offer sanctuary and welcome.

The workshop was hosted by Nathan D. Ndlovu, Secretary of CARAG and creator of the Still We Rise podcast. Also joining us were Tam Kaur (Coventry City of Culture Trust), Reem Doukmak (Integration Project Team Leader, Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre) and Dickson Tarnongo (Human Rights activist, disability rights campaigner and member of CARAG).

NOVEMBER 2020: BLACK LIVES MATTER: CULTURAL LEADERSHIP

Despite the diverse people, stories, outputs and perspectives the cultural sector embodies, there is a distinct lack of Black leadership.

In this edition of Culture Conversations, we explored how the sector, and cultural leaders, can make space for Black leadership.

OCTOBER 2020: EVERYONE IN

Inspired by World Homeless Day, which took place earlier that month, we joined with friends from Coventry and beyond to discuss the value of creativity and what City of Culture might bring to the lives of people affected by homelessness in Coventry.

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen rough sleepers given hotel accommodation as part of the ‘Everyone In’ scheme. But homelessness reaches much further than this – with thousands more facing joblessness and housing instability. We explored the role arts and culture plays during these challenging times and beyond, and how we can use City of Culture as a vehicle for change.

SEPTEMBER 2020: PEACE

In September, we were delighted to be joined by guest speaker Laura Nyahuye, a Coventry artist and designer. All participants were invited to listen to the below spoken word piece and reflect on their own associations with peace.

What type of artform speaks to you of peace? Is it the smell of a traditional dish? The textures of fabrics? A memory? An image? What’s the word for peace in your mother tongue? Laura’s word is rugare – a Shona word.
