In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats is an interactive virtual reality experience by award-winning filmmaker Darren Emerson, inviting audiences to go in search of an illegal rave, one night in Coventry in 1989. From poster-strewn bedrooms to pirate radio stations, police headquarters to secret warehouses, you’ll step-into the shoes of rave culture pioneers as you go in search of the party.

Witness this social phenomenon first-hand, in an immersive exhibition and explorable virtual world set in Coventry. Combining Acid House tracks with interactivity and multi-sensory simulation, In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats brings to life the stories of the promoters, police officers, and rave-goers, whose rivalries and relationships drove a revolution in music and society.

Book your ticket back to 1989 to share in an experience that shaped a generation; to feel the anticipation, the trepidation, the excitement, and the euphoria, that was Acid House.

Good To Know

• Each session has a capacity of 4; you can book as an individual or in groups of between 2-4.

• The VR experience runs for approximately 30 minutes (not including the welcome briefing); please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of your session and allow for up-to an hour from start-to-finish.

• The whole experience takes place in an installation space in which visitors wear a VR headset; during the experience you will move around in the space wearing the headset, engaging with virtual and physical/sensory experiences. This has been designed to feel safe, and to be as intuitive, enjoyable, and accessible as possible for everyone. Trained facilitators will be on hand to provide support and guidance throughout the experience should you require it.

• VR headsets are cleaned thoroughly after each session.

• Following the VR experience there is a small exhibition containing archive and other audio-visual materials exploring the British Acid House scene to enjoy at your leisure.

• The VR experience is recommended for audiences aged 15+ (the content features references to illegal activity and drug taking). People younger than 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian; VR is not recommended for those younger than 13.

When you get here:

The entrance to the experience is around the side of the building and there will be signs or city hosts to guide you to the correct place.

The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users, with accessible toilets at the front of the building.

How the VR experience works for different accessibility requirements:

For Visually impaired audience members - one of our experience hosts will act as a guide, leading you through the physical installation and then guiding you in the VR. This means that they will weae the VR headset and do the ‘seeing’ and interacting with virtual objects, whilst the audience member who is visually impaired hears and feels the experience through headphones and a haptic vest called a subpac.

For audience members who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing - we can offer the hosts ‘onboarding scripts’ as printed documents during the walk through of the installation. When in the VR we can activate subtitles so that the story is explained in text as well as dialogue.

For audience members who are wheelchair users and for those who want or need to sit - we can activate a version of the experience that allows you to traverse the virtual environments using a ‘teleport’ function. Using a simple joystick style controller, the audience member will be able to move around the spaces and rotate their point of view, interacting and experiencing the film without having to be on their feet. Stools & seats will be available.
