Interested in how our society behaves in a crisis? Join us for the premiere of The Island, the culmination of a fascinating social experiment commissioned by Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 and produced by De Balie, an organisation based in Amsterdam with an international reputation for producing high-quality work that makes change happen.

This spring, we filmed interviews of 11 Coventry residents, who represent several groups of society on a newly inhabited island just off of the mainland. The group is steered through difficult objectives laid out by the esteemed Hungarian director Árpád Schilling.

How do these representatives steer the island and the islanders through economic difficulties, crime, an influx of refugees and other challenges? What rules do they impose to ensure peace and tranquillity? When and why is solidarity needed?

During this event, we will screen a premiere of the film, and the audience will be invited to reflect on the film with sociologist Ben Kyneswood (Coventry University), moderator Chris Rolls (64 Million Artists) and the participants themselves. The event will be co-hosted by Anne-Marijn Epker (Senior Editor, De Balie).

Árpád Schilling produced a similar film last year, named The Vaccine, that replicated the rush for the Covid-19 vaccines we have experienced these past months.
