Turner Prize

Wed 12 Jan 2022 @ 15.15

With Tate and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum

One of the best-known prizes for visual arts in the world, Turner Prize 2021 is coming to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry as part of UK City of Culture 2021. The Turner Prize is awarded annually to an artist born, living or working in Britain, for an outstanding exhibition or public presentation of their work anywhere in the world in the previous year.

Every other year, the Prize leaves Tate Britain and is presented at a venue outside London.

The shortlisted artists are:
• Array Collective
• Black Obsidian Sound System
• Cooking Sections
• Gentle/Radical
• Project Art Works

This is the first time a Turner Prize jury has selected a shortlist consisting entirely of artist collectives. All the nominees work closely and continuously with communities across the breadth of the UK to inspire social change through art. The collaborative practices selected for this year’s shortlist also reflect the solidarity and community demonstrated in response to the pandemic.

The announcement of the winner is on 1 December 2021.

The 2021 Prize’s jury is: Russell Tovey, Actor; Zoé Whitley, Director, Chisenhale Gallery; Aaron Cezar, Director, Delfina Foundation; and Kim McAleese, Programme Director, Grand Union.

The Turner Prize 2021 is supported by the AKO Foundation, Avanti West Coast and Arts Council England, with additional support from ArtAV, the John Browne Charitable Trust and Lance Uggla.

The Turner Prize Explained

Tue 26 Oct 2021 @ 19.00

Established in 1984 and causing controversy almost every year since, the Turner Prize is regarded by many as a great showcase for British avant-garde art, and by others as conceptualist rubbish. The exhibitions each Autumn continue to draw larger and larger crowds and, more than three decades since its inception, many of its early nominees have become household names and extremely popular amongst the general public.

This lecture looks at great winners (and losers) from the past and clarifies the ideas behind the annual competition. It will include many of the best-loved and some of the more controversial works, including those of Damien Hirst (who won the Prize in 1995) and Tracey Emin (short-listed in 1999). When possible, the lecture will include works by the current year’s nominees and/or the previous year’s winner.

Hand sanitiser available on entry.

Limit 4 tickets per person.

Members of The Arts Society Coventry should book tickets for which there is no charge (for membership details, see https://theartssociety.org/coventry )

Deliaphonic: Lonelady

Sat 5 Mar 2022 @ 18.00

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: We're very sorry to have to announce that Loula Yorke will no longer be performing on Saturday 5 March as part of the Deliaphonic Festival. But we’re glad to have Vanishing Twin, a London-based psychedelic pop quintet, to complete the new lineup.

"Really sad I can no longer be there this weekend due to illness. Super glad an ace replacement, Vanishing Twin, has been found for my slot on Saturday night!" Loula Yorke

Age guideline: 14+ years (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult)

Our Saturday evening headliner LoneLady, a.k.a Julie Campbell, is a musician, songwriter, singer and producer from Manchester. As her name indicates, LoneLady writes, performs and records all the components of her music, building up her own sound worlds in a solitary creative process.

She'll be joined by musicians Richard Norris and Vanishing Twin to complete the lineup. A DJ set from Jerry Dammers’ collection of ‘library music’ records and visual images, plus a new composition recorded by Jerry accompanying the paintings of Turner Prize nominated Coventry artist George Shaw. Enjoy a turbulent night of electronica and funk in the iconic Coventry Cathedral and be ready to scream.

Deliaphonic is also working with Coventry City of Culture’s international partner the British Council and Sheffield-based Sensoria Festival to host FAMLAB IV. The week-long residency brings together 10 international and UK musicians and composers to explore film composition, archive material and collaborative music projects. Deliaphonic will be unveiling work made from this project as part of the Saturday evening performances. The British Council also supports live streaming of Saturday’s programme for wider UK and international audiences to enjoy.
