Coventry City of Culture Trust marks loneliness awareness week with poetry from staff and residents of two Coventry care homes.

17 June 2020

This week is loneliness awareness week hosted by the Marmalade Trust. This year, talking about loneliness is more important than ever as the Covid-19 pandemic has separated families and has left more people feeling isolated.

Care homes have been some of the places hardest hit by the pandemic with residents and staff unable to see family or visitors. Staff have been, and are continuing to work day and night to keep residents safe. The resilience of residents and staff has been astounding and we wanted to recognise that.

To try and open up the conversation about loneliness in Coventry, our Caring City team has been working with two care homes, Sovereign House and Beechwood Gardens, on the Poetry by Postcard project. Residents and staff were asked to think about ‘Hopeful Visions Of A New Normal’ and share their thoughts and reflections with the team.

These hopeful visions could be things they would like to see happen in the community, changes they hope for as we come out of lockdown and things they are looking forward to. With these ideas and responses, professional artist Joelle Taylor created a poem called ‘How the dance remembers you’ which encapsulates them all.

You can read the poem here.

You can listen to the poem here.

If you are feeling lonely, especially during this often isolating pandemic, then please reach out to friends, family or an organisation that can offer you support.

Big thank you to Spirit of 2012, who was our main funder for this project.

The submission we had from staff and residents of the care homes are incredibly moving and inspiring and we wanted to share them you.
