Peace, tranquillity, our messages for the future.

10 December 2018
Maureen McAllister - Coventry City of Culture Trust

Devastated by the Blitz, Coventry responded with a message of forgiveness and peace, and a fervent wish to see the end violent conflict.  This spirit of reconciliation, hope and trust is what makes Coventry the proud and respected city it is today. It underpins its nature and its warm welcome to people of all cultures.  Today, the city stands shoulder to shoulder with cities around the world who have faced violent conflict and has the largest network of twinned cities in the world.  Sharing a message of peace with those cities and their people.

Find your own peace in Coventry, spend time reflecting in our Cathedral, immerse yourself in the candlelight concerts on 13th and 16th December, or expel the dark hours by experiencing ‘Sunrise’ in the Cathedral ruins from 31st December to 13th January.  The doors of Holy Trinity Church and St John the Baptist Church are open and offer the warmest of welcomes; the Herbert Gallery gives you time and space to think and enjoy the many artworks and the Big Comfy Bookshop is there for you to hunker down with a book and bowl of soup.  Stroll in deep contemplation, in Memorial Park, Charterhouse Park, Coombe Abbey or ‘Follow that Hare’ on a self-led art and nature trail around Warwick Arts Centre campus.

We now invite you to share our peaceful message and your thoughts, wishes and messages for the future.  The 14ft high illuminated Peace Poem is travelling across the UK, gathering stories, pledges and poems of peace for the National Peace Archive.  We welcomed it to the city 10th December giving the people of the city a chance to ‘write a message to a stranger’ at every stop.
