Mary moved to Coventry from Scotland in 1968 and has lived here ever since. Now, as a City Host, she is giving back to the city that gave her such a warm welcome.
What inspired you to sign up to be a City Host?
I believe I owe it to the city. I came here as a new bride in 1968 to a warm welcome from the people of Coventry, so I feel like now is the time for me to give something back.
Communicating with visitors and enabling them to enjoy what my city has to offer is a source of great joy for me. There is so much to learn about the city, its history, its post-war development and its diversity. Encouraging visitors to see the best of the city so that they might encourage others to visit is a great feeling.
What have you gained from your experience as a City Host so far?
I have gained new skills, new opportunities to discover my city and the chance to become involved with new people.
What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming a City Host?
It is a once in a lifetime opportunity that is challenging but rewarding. You will be part of something very special.
