‘Listen.presents’ Launch: Norman Jay MBE this October

16 August 2019

On October 26th, an exciting new team of professional festival and party organisers will be launching their latest venture in the Midlands. At The Rave LTD will launch ‘Listen.presents’ a series of music events set in unique and intimate spaces and venues. Each experience offers state of the art audio systems and cutting edge visuals. The first event takes place in Coventry, the UK’s new City Of Culture and is the latest wave in a resurgence of club culture in the West Midlands.

By the end of the 20th century, the city labelled as a concrete jungle’s reputation was cemented as one of the UK’s most vibrant music scenes. 60’s garage rock band The Sorrows first put Coventry on the musical map by becoming the first home-grown band to enter the charts with ‘Take a Heart’, but it wasn’t until the late 70’s when The Specials and The Selecter birthed the Two-Tone movement that all eyes were on the Coventry ‘scene’.

Fast forward a little to the 90’s when the opening of Coventry’s first legal all-night rave at legendary club Eclipse. People travelled from all over the UK to attend. The club played host to big-name DJs such as Carl Cox, Graeme Park, DJ RAP, Top Buzz, Sasha and The Prodigy. Other noted moments in music history are when The Enemy rose to fame in the early noughties, fostering a flourishing local indie scene with other bands such as Pint Shot Riot and The Ripps also gaining national acclaim. But it’s all been a bit quiet…until now.

New scene makers and experienced event organisers are springing up around the West Midlands. The spirit of reinvention and celebration that Coventry championed in the days after recovering from the devastation in the war is on the rise. The city is charged. Venues & promoters like Digbeth Dining Club, Leftfoot events, The Empire, Ghost Town Series, RUINS Events & Motoring are all paving the way. Most recently The Specials returned to the city with 4 sell-out shows in the Ruins of Coventry Cathedral in July.

Coventry residents and At The Rave Directors, Ben Pickering and James Gibson, who are leading the Listen.presents team have both been working in Festivals, Major Events and Hospitality industries for over 30 years.

James Gibson, ATR Director said: “I used to travel to Eclipse with my older brother and sister when I lived in Swindon running a record shop, now Coventry is my hometown and it’s amazing to feel that energy and buzz about the place again.”

Listen. presents aims to step up the game by bringing world-renowned DJ Norman Jay MBE to Coventry City Centre venue Square One this October.

Ben Pickering, ATR Director said: “Norman Jay MBE is a music institution in his own right, he’s the perfect fit for a city like Coventry that really owns and backs its music history. From The Specials to the 00’s days when we could see acts like Joey Negro & Bob Sinclar at Carey’s, Coventry knows how to party.”

Norman Jay is unquestionably one of the most respected and popular DJs in the world today. Co-founder of the legendary Good Times Sound System and London dance music station KISS FM, Jay fostered the ‘Rare Groove’ scene pushing the boundaries of the UK’s emerging club culture. Awarded an MBE for services to deejaying and music, in 2017 he released ‘Mister Good Times’ capturing the true spirit of Good Times, and is currently taking his legendary parties to selected venues around the UK, continuing to convert generations of clubbers to the cause, championing new sounds, yet never forgetting his musical roots.

Early bird tickets to the first Listen.presents with Norman Jay MBE, on 26th October, will go on sale Friday 16th August at 9 am via Ticket Web.
