No Direction Home Coventry Call-Out

FREE COMEDY WORKSHOPS FOR SANCTUARY SEEKERS IN CV POSTCODES

Are you a Refugee or Asylum Seeker in Coventry and Warwickshire? Join us to meet new people, build your confidence and learn how to make people laugh.

Professional comedians Tom Parry and Stella Graham, who both perform in popular No Direction Home comedy nights, will work with you to write and perform your very own stand-up comedy set.

We’re proud to commission this project in collaboration with Counterpoints Arts and Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre with funding from Spirit of 2012.

No Direction Home comedy nights were originally devised by Counterpoints Arts, Camden People’s Theatre and Tom Parry.

THE WORKSHOPS

The programme will start with two online taster sessions on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 March at 6.30pm. Both sessions will last two hours.

Online weekly sessions will start thereafter from Wednesday 7 April and will continue each Wednesday at 6.30pm until late June, finishing with live performances at the end of June. Each session will last two hours.

Tom and Stella will work with you to build a 2-5 minute stand up set to perform in front of a live audience, either online or in person, as part of Coventry’s UK City of Culture programme. Don’t worry if you think you don’t have the right skills – all are welcome.

The workshops will build your confidence, employability skills and public speaking skills, as well as English speaking skills. Best of all, you will learn how to make people laugh.

ACCESS INFORMATION

To begin with, workshops will take place on Zoom, in line with government restrictions. As restrictions ease, workshops may also take place in person.

If you have any physical or financial barriers that could prevent you from accessing weekly Zoom workshops, let us know and we’ll see how we can help. For example, you may require support with WiFi or a device to access the calls.

If you require a translator, let us know and we can provide one at every session. Live closed captioning can also be provided.

For workshops that take place in person, we can support you with travel expenses, food and child support if required.
