Mothers Who Make – Coventry – June Hub
The second meeting of Coventry’s new ‘Mothers Who Make’ hub in Studio 1 at The Herbert will focus on finding, exploring and maintaining creative spaces in motherhood, as inspired by the reflective article “Space!?” by Mothers Who Make founder, Matilda Leyser which you can read here: https://motherswhomake.org/matildainmotion/space
In this peer support session we will explore our own methods of holding onto creative spaces, whether they be mental spaces or physical places… We shall contemplate and invite you to share where you dream, nourish your ideas and remain creative in your daily lives. How can we build and sustain a fertile community which supports us in our individual and collaborative endeavours? How do we navigate the impulse to make with the role of being a mother, and how do we carve enriching spaces for both activities to flourish?
Every kind of maker is welcome- professional and/or passionate – writers, visual artists, performers, producers, musicians, bakers, crafters, architects, historians ….
Every kind of mother is welcome- biological, adoptive, step, surrogate, foster, grand, great grand, to be ….
Mothers Who Make is not a child centred play session or an adult only event but a third way – an adult centred group which welcomes children. Children of any age are encouraged to attend and are integrated into the meeting, for the dual roles of mother and artist are recognised and given equal value within all MWM events. Toys are provided.

This hub has been co-ordinated by artists Jessica Timmis and Adele Mary Reed.
Adele is a photographer and mother based in Coventry. Her daughter was born in September 2017. She has recently exhibited her photographs at The Herbert and Class Room gallery, as well as moving image works at Coventry Cathedral and The Tin Music & Arts. You can find out more about her work at her website adelemreed.co.uk
Jessica: “I’m Jess Timmis. I am an Artist and an Art psychotherapist and I also like to write sometimes. I have two lovely children – a boy aged 15 and a girl aged 2 and I am a single parent.
I was drawn to set up the hub with Adele because I want to increase creative support for women negotiating the artistic challenges of motherhood. I want to help provide a place to play and think together. I would like to foster a community that creatively articulates the often invisible and unacknowledged work of caregiving. I’ve been looking for a space to nourish me for ages so I thought I’d better help make one.”
