Isabel Balboa – The Fascination of Asian Calligraphy
Asian calligraphy doesn’t only mean “beautiful writing“, but for thousands of years has been considered as a main skill of good education in far eastern countries and is still representing one of the ways to lead to a fulfilled life.
Isabel Balboa has studied SHODOO for several years in Japan and Korea with great masters, she has taught adults and children and wants to share her fascination for the purity, the simplicity and the decisiveness of the black stroke, the interaction of black and white, of line and space, and immerge with you in ancient wisdom through the beauty of Chinese and Japanese characters.
Gill began painting shortly after early retirement when an artist friend persuaded her to “have a go”! Since then, she has just loved painting. She paints using Acrylics or Oils and is greatly influenced by the impressionists style, bold colours and loose strokes! Most of her work includes texture, which is created by using tissue paper, texture paste or even sand and grit!
Gill’s inspiration comes from Creation. The rich colours of the changing seasons, the layers in the landscape, the intricate shape and beauty of flowers, and the ever-changing colours of the sky reflected in water, all contribute to the colour in her art. Painting and creating art is such a joy for Gill and she loves “playing about” with different media. Mixed media work has become her latest exploration into a different style of working. She doesn’t specialise in one particular theme or style and enjoys seeing what results from the different media that she uses.
As well as exhibiting at East Lodge with Leamington Studio Artists, Gill exhibits with The Stratford Society of Artists, and the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists. She regularly takes part in Warwickshire Open Studios, as well as exhibiting in other private venues.
Gill also has paintings in private collections as far afield as California, Singapore and Australia!
“It never ceases to amaze me how art, in its many forms and facets, can stimulate the subconscious and distant memories, long forgotten; how I am guided through the learning process, as if by unseen hands, both exhilarating and sometimes frustrating. But you must have faith. Who knows what tomorrow brings? Who knows what the blackbird sings? We are in the hands of time as surely as the sun will shine, as surely as the rain will fall, the hand of fate will guide us all.
I love the learning process, to create something that is absolutely unique is amazing. Art is a passion which we will have for the rest of our lives and for many it is their life. Keep Art in your heart my friends.
SJ Fogg – Inspired
Reflecting a background in fashion design and a love for modern architecture, art and 70’s design, the current collection has been inspired by some of my favourite iconic artists and is a ‘hommage’ to the person and their work. The creations are intended to be timeless accessories, an expression of the wearer’s personality and style, rather than a short lived trend.
Made from sterling silver, often combined with unorthodox or ‘out of context’ materials and vintage pearls, each piece or set is a one off, and as such a reflection of the uniqueness of the wearer.”
East Lodge Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Admission is free. See lsa-artists.org for further details of all our eventsMore info
