EMMA - City Host Case Study

Emma’s passion for volunteering, representing younger generations in the city and spreading her love of Coventry shines through in everything she does. It’s this passion and drive that led Emma to apply to the City Host programme and go on to secure a paid role supporting other volunteers too. Here, Emma shares her journey so far and encourages others to join her before it’s too late!

What inspired you to sign up to be a City Host?

City of Culture coming to Coventry is a once in a lifetime type of event. To be able to say that I was part of this historic year and was actively involved in welcoming and guiding people from all over the world into our city is something I am immensely proud of. This is my city, where I was born and raised and becoming a City Host allowed me to express how proud I am to come from Coventry but also to share my experiences and stories with people from all over.

What have you gained from your experience as a City Host so far?

In a short space of time, I went from a City Host to City Host Team Leader. After showing my leadership skills and enthusiasm during shifts as a Host and Team Leader, I was encouraged to apply for the paid position of Volunteer Coordinator. Following a successful interview, I was appointed as one of the Volunteer Coordinators for the programme and now help to support and guide other City Hosts.

This career change was welcome but also unexpected, giving me a boost in confidence and sense of pride. As well as gaining an amazing job, I have gained so many new friends in the process and absolutely love my role supporting Hosts with their journey.

This role has given me a lot to think about in terms of my future because I now believe event management could be an option that I would never have considered before taking this role. I am so much happier as a person thanks to the City Hosts programme and have gained some amazing transferable skills that I didn't expect to. I have also taken advantage of the training sessions on offer to us to boost my personal and professional growth.

What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming a City Host?

In life, you only regret the chances you don't take. This opportunity will not come around again and if you wait too long, you may miss it. There are so many different events, meaning we cater for everyone's taste. We have an amazing team behind the scenes to support your journey and we have even accompanied new Hosts on their first shift where they feel they need extra support. The Hosts themselves are friendly, fun and full of interesting stories which means no two shifts are ever the same.

If you are looking to meet some new people, get out the house or experience once in a lifetime events, this is for you. Volunteering is very rewarding and can give people the confidence they need to change their lives.
