Student Conor started volunteering long before Coventry became City of Culture as a DJ on local radio station, Hillz FM. Being a City Host has expanded Conor’s experience further, enabling him to gain leadership skills in the process. Here, Conor tells us why he decided to sign up to become a City Host and encourages others to do the same.
What inspired you to sign up to be a City Host?
I study film, TV and radio production at Coventry College and am a 2021 champion there, so I knew they were actively looking for volunteers for the City Hosts programme. Being involved is a huge honour for me because I’m able to help out with something that is massive for Coventry. I know a lot about the city, and I knew I could help guide others to where they need to go and make their experience an awesome one. I always want to try and make everyone positive and smile, as everyone being happy and in sync can make an event great.
What have you gained from your experience as a City Host so far?
I have gained vast amounts of friendships, experience that will be useful for future endeavours as well as memories that will last a lifetime. I have also developed my leadership skills by becoming a Team Leader.
What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming a City Host?
Please do it! You’ll never regret becoming a City Host. All the hosts are extremely supportive, and the events are so much fun
