Six months into Coventry 2021 we catch up with our Finance Apprentice Shannon Mills

The apprenticeship programme at the City of Culture Trust began in November of last year, recruiting 14 Coventry and Warwickshire residents, eager to learn and develop skills in departments such as production, finance, marketing and fundraising. The apprentices have been with the Trust for a year now, and they want to reflect on what they have achieved in their time at the Trust so far.

Shannon Mills, one of the finance Apprentices, tells us about her experience.

I always knew I wanted to work in the Finance industry but never plucked up the courage to challenge myself and go for it. During the first lockdown I decided it was time to follow my dream career. I was searching online for courses to apply for, and I came across the vacancy for the Finance Assistant Apprenticeship with Coventry City of Culture Trust. After reading through the job description and learning about the organisation I knew it was something I wanted to do and be involved in, so with only one day left to apply I just went for it and sent in my application.

A couple weeks later, I got a call and was offered an interview; I was over the moon. Even though I have past experience in administration and customer service, I am a mother of two in my late twenties and knew I would be a little older than other apprentices that would have applied so I felt like I really needed to impress the interviewers to prove I was the best candidate for the job. When I got the call that I had been offered the job I was so happy and proud of myself. I knew this was going to be the start of something great.

Working for City of Culture has been a great experience. I have learnt so much and I have gained invaluable experience, skills, and knowledge within my job role. I started my apprenticeship studying Level 2 in Accounting and in July 2021 I passed my course with a Distinction! I am super proud of myself for achieving this and I genuinely believe I wouldn’t have done so well if it wasn’t for the support and encouragement of my wonderful team and the Trust. I am less than a month away from completing my Level 2 Finance Assistant Apprenticeship and I have already started studying towards my Level 3 in Accounting. I have achieved so much more than I ever expected within the last twelve months, and it is all thanks to City of Culture and the team. I have loved being involved in the events, working behind the scenes, watching the events come together and being involved in a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Thank you, Coventry City of Culture, for giving me the opportunity to work on something so special, for helping me kick-start my dream career and for encouraging me to achieve the things I have.

I am looking forward to continuing to work on my career goals and I know the future is bright.
