As the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations, the British Council is delighted to be the International Partner for Coventry City of Culture 2021 and beyond. The British Council is excited by Coventry City of Culture Trust’s people-first approach to developing its cultural programme, being led by the communities that make up the creative and cultural fabric of the city. Coventry is inherently international – from the diversity of its population, to having first founded the twinned cities movement and more recently, having established itself as a warm and welcoming City of Sanctuary for those most in need. The British Council’s vision is for Coventry to be internationally inspired and globally connected. As well as supporting international partnerships and exchange through this collaboration with Coventry City of Culture Trust, it hopes to embed internationalism and global partnerships across the arts, education and civil society sectors in the city. The organisation will build on the city’s existing international connections and broker new relationships, engendering understanding and trust between the people of Coventry and people from other countries. The British Council is working together with the people of Coventry to create enduring, meaningful relationships that matter. Together, they will cultivate a generation of globally minded young people, who welcome and celebrate diversity, enriching the lives of everyone involved. The British Council feels truly privileged to be part of the city’s journey as it embarks on becoming UK City of Culture 2021 and to working with the wider city to ensure a lasting international legacy and network of enduring relationships. It very much looks forward to working with Coventry City of Culture.
